Session: “Start Your Chemistry Course with these Experiments”

Monday, July 24, 2023 – SSC 2102 – 9:30 – 11:15 AM

Learn how to collect time-based and event-based data using a temp probe and pressure sensor. Data will be analyzed by fitting curves and applying calculated columns.

Session: “Forensic Chemistry: Combine Spectroscopy and Beer’s Law to Solve a Crime of Poisoning”

Monday, July 24, 2023 – SSC 2102 – 2:30 – 3:15 PM

Guests at a dinner party are falling ill. Identify the poison and determine why some were sick and others died? Use one spectrometer and colorimeters with your class to answer these questions.

Session: “Food Chemistry: Using Column Chromatography and Spectroscopy to Determine the Food Dyes in a Mixture”

Monday, July 24, 2023 – SSC 2102 – 3:30 – 5:15 PM

A mixture of the 9 FD&C food dyes are used to color drinks. Using chromatography and spectroscopy, participants will separate the dyes and determine which of these dyes are used in the drink mixture.
